The Practice Stage

2024-02-09T10:26:57+09:00

The PRACTICE stage is when students get to practice new language. This stage can involve a variety of controlled and less-controlled activities. These activities may include:

●Listen and repeat where key words and sentences from a story or dialogue are repeated. The focus is on practicing correct pronunciation and intonation.
●Pattern practice where sentence structures are changed to help memorization of key sentence forms.
●Gap-fill tasks where students are required to fill in missing information.
●Questions and answers (Q+A time).

The main focus of the practice stage is accuracy. The teacher will practice key language and provide error correction until students are familiar with its form and use. It is important for students to listen carefully to the instructions, focus on the key patterns, and ask the teacher if something needs explaining.

Use It or Lose It

2024-02-09T10:22:30+09:00

If you can speak any English or have studied before, it is important to maintain your skill level. People can quickly start to lose their skill base if they stop studying or are unable to use their English regularly. As the saying goes, “Use it or lose it.” At EIGOLESSON, we recommend taking weekly lessons as an essential way to maintain and help improve your English ability.

The Importance of Reading

2024-02-09T10:23:21+09:00

Exposure to any form of English is necessary to improve a student’s overall skill base. However, reading is considered an essential part of learning English, and it can help develop other areas such as vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. At EIGOLESSON, we recommend choosing something that interests you and is just above your reading level. Start with a short text, and read as often as you can.

Taking Risks

2024-02-09T10:23:39+09:00

There is no ‘one-way’ to study English. People learn and respond to different approaches in different ways. However, those students who take risks in lessons, such as by speaking whenever possible, will make the most progress. This approach builds self-confidence, increases student participation, and can lead to the learning of new skills.

Practice Makes Perfect

2024-02-09T10:24:08+09:00

The old saying “practice makes perfect” is particularly true about becoming a fluent English speaker. Those students who practice and use the language more often learn more quickly. As speaking is the most important skill for language development, make use of every opportunity you have to practice.

The Bridge

2024-02-09T10:24:30+09:00

The bridge is the stage of a lesson where the teacher connects the icebreaker to the main purpose of the lesson. This involves introducing concepts and skills, and these come in the form of:

  • a specific topic in which students are directed to talk about in order to achieve a specific goal.
  • questions that lead students to use specific language patterns or vocabulary.
  • visuals that activate students’ imaginations and focus on brainstorming key vocabulary and phrases that can be used later in the lesson.

With these techniques, the teacher is trying to build interest in the lesson topic, provide a smooth transition from the icebreaker to the main body of the lesson, and determine what the students know regarding the lesson material.

Making Mistakes

2024-02-09T10:25:26+09:00

Making progress in your English studies means not being afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and they give you the opportunity to learn something and improve. The student who is willing to recognize and accept their mistakes will almost always have better learning outcomes. Don’t be afraid of your mistakes, and see your confidence and ability grow.

Learning New Vocabulary

2024-02-09T10:24:52+09:00

To better learn and retain vocabulary, it is important to make a note of new words during the lesson, review them after each lesson, and actively try to use them in the following lessons. Your understanding of their meanings and the situations they are used in will improve dramatically.

Advice From the Teacher

2024-02-09T10:25:11+09:00

1) When replying to a question from the teacher or another student, don’t just answer yes or no. Try to add an extra comment. This shows you are interested and want to continue the conversation.

2) Ask questions. By asking “wh-questions” such as why, what, where, and when, it shows that you are willing to maintain an even balance in the conversation and don’t just simply want to listen.

3) Express interest in the conversation and the other speaker. This can be achieved by using stress and intonation and can also be done through positive body language.

4) Don’t let the conversation end unless it comes to an end naturally. Listen carefully to falling intonation and pauses used by the other speaker. This may signal a desire for you to continue or to change the topic.

Being Proactive

2024-02-09T10:25:44+09:00

Being proactive with your English learning is a great way to speed up your progress. One way to do this is to speak first to teachers or other English learners. This means you control the conversation and its direction, giving you more confidence to continue speaking. By taking control of your learning, you will achieve quicker results.
